Do you feel unwell during a heatwave, are you less efficient or even notice health effects on your body? Don't worry, you're not alone, because many people feel the same way. The good news is that there are ways to counteract heat complaints. In this blog post, we would like to give you some tips to help you get through the hot temperatures.
Keep an eye on the weather forecast and watch out for heat warnings on TV, radio, the internet or in the newspaper. Are you in for a few hot days? Try to adapt your everyday life to the warm temperatures, for example by moving physically strenuous activities to the cooler morning or evening hours. In general, avoid extreme heat if possible.
Only ventilate when it is cooler outside than in your home - ideally at night or early in the morning. You should also keep windows closed during the day and darken them with blinds or shutters. A fan can also provide cool air indoors. This effect is enhanced by placing a container of ice cubes in front of the appliance. However, the general rule is to use as few electrical appliances as possible, as they give off heat.
Drink enough. This means about two to three liters throughout the day. In hot weather, water, chilled teas or juice spritzers are best. However, you should avoid very cold drinks, alcohol, caffeine or sugar. They put a strain on the circulation and dehydrate the body. If you have heart or kidney disease, ask your doctor for advice on how much to drink.
Eat lightly. During a hot spell, it is better to eat several small meals than three large ones. Also make sure you eat mainly light and fresh foods such as fruit and vegetables and provide your body with sufficient minerals. This is because sweating flushes out minerals such as sodium, which is important for regulating the water balance. Give your body back the sodium it has lost by eating normally salted foods and drinking enough water to avoid electrolyte imbalances that lead to tiredness, delayed reactions or confusion.
Apply sun cream and avoid the blazing sun. This is because the ultraviolet (UV) radiation contained in sunlight also harbors dangers. Too much of it can cause numerous health problems - in the worst case, skin cancer. For this reason, you should always protect your skin in hot temperatures with sun cream, a hat and light clothing. Sunglasses are recommended for your eyes.
