As a mechatronics technician, you are an important link in ensuring that everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. With passion and dedication for technology, you are responsible for ensuring that our logistics systems run smoothly at our locations in Upper Franconia and that the goods reach our customers on time. Philipp has been working as a mechatronics technician in our systems engineering department for three years and talks about his experiences in this interview.
My name is Philipp, I'm 26 years old and I come from the Kulmbach district. I have been working as a mechatronics technician in plant engineering at the BAUR Group in Altenkunstadt for about 3 years. I was particularly attracted to working for the BAUR Group because I was looking for an employer close to where I live.
We take care of the conveyor and sorting systems in our logistics at the Altenkunstadt site. We maintain them and repair them in the event of a fault. We also look after the folding machines in the printing center. In Burgkunstadt, we also look after the systems in the furniture hall. If there are cases of illness, we sometimes help out at our sites in Weismain and Sonnefeld.
Even if there is a conversion in the hall or new equipment is installed, we are responsible for ensuring that the employees can continue to work without major restrictions. We also have colleagues who look after the spare parts warehouse. They are also responsible for ordering spare parts for the systems. I myself am also the deputy shift manager.
I have always worked in a technical field. I did an apprenticeship as a mechatronics technician for refrigeration technology and then worked as a service technician for wind turbines. However, at some point I was traveling too much for this job, which is why I started looking for a new position.
You never know what's going to happen next and every day as a mechatronics engineer is therefore different. There are days when little happens and there are days when many machines have faults. Nevertheless, you have to find a solution for everything as quickly as possible, even if there are no spare parts available. So you have to be able to react flexibly and always come up with something so that operations can continue.
We in Altenkunstadt work in three shifts. The early shift works from 05:30 to 14:00, the late shift from 13:30 to 22:30 and the night shift from 22:00 to 6:00 in the morning. Seven people work each shift. We also work an early shift on Sundays approximately every six weeks.
Maintenance work is mainly carried out during the night shifts. How many machines need to be repaired and when usually depends on the order quantities. If there are a lot of orders, then the machines are busier and therefore have more faults.
I've never worked shifts before, but you quickly find your feet. One advantage is definitely that you can arrange appointments much more flexibly. You don't always have to make appointments in the afternoon or evening, you can also do them in the morning.
It's also practical that we have a rolling day, i.e. a day off, every week. In principle, you can schedule it however you like, so you don't have to take extra vacation.
Another big advantage of the night shift is that we only have to work four nights in a row. We then have the remaining three days of the week off. Of course, it's especially nice when these three days fall on a weekend. However, we generally make sure that each of us has the same number of weekends off throughout the year.
That in any case. You do something different every day, depending on what's going on. In principle, the systems that need to be repaired or maintained are similar. Nevertheless, there's always something different broken on the systems from time to time, so the work always alternates.
You can talk as equals in a team. No one is angry with anyone else if they don't agree with each other, but we always listen to each other. We're also a young team and you can definitely laugh a lot together.
It's also nice that we have 30 days' vacation a year and can work off our overtime. Even if you need time off spontaneously, it's no problem as long as it's agreed with your colleagues. We also have free coffee, which is also very practical.
If you are interested in the position, then definitely come to the interview and just drop by for a day to see the work for yourself. We look forward to your support!
