In "Inside Training", trainees give you an insight into our apprenticeships and dual study programs. Today, photographer Nick tells us about his apprenticeship at BAUR Studios.
Hi, I'm Nick Berger. I'm from Kulmbach and I'm 22 years old. I'm training to be a photographer and I'm in my third year of training.
The first thing I did was find out which photo studios were nearby. I was also interested in the profession of media designer, which is why I also looked around for suitable companies. The BAUR Group offered both positions, which is why I applied for both. However, I decided quite early on to train as a photographer. I was particularly impressed by the large photo studio. You have a lot of opportunities there, as you have a good basis thanks to the equipment and also the contact persons. Many people say that the training at the BAUR Group and the BAUR studios is very good.
It was a bit of a wild ride, I would say. It was clear to me that I definitely wanted to do something creative in connection with technology. I also didn't just want to sit in an office, I wanted to be active. I also tried something out and did an internship at a TV station in the field of social media for several months. I liked the field, but you sit at a computer a lot. I also looked into the field of media design in the form of an internship. It was nice and very creative, but again it involved a lot of computer work. Then I thought about what was even more creative and what I could do more of. This then went in the direction of photography.
As with other professions, you submit your application. You can also submit pictures of yourself, which are then discussed at an interview, but it is not a must.
It's difficult to summarizemy daily tasks because itreally is something different every day. We have different departments in which we rotate every 6 months, such as internet photography, furniture, on location, fashion, shoes and bags. These tasks are extremely varied. I don't have a favorite department either, everything has its appeal. This week we were commissioned to produce photos for a computer accessories manufacturer. To do this, we built two rooms in the studio, e.g. a gaming basement, and two models came along. A photo shoot is not just about taking pictures, because you also have to name the pictures and make sure the lighting is right so that the product comes out well. You are also in contact with the customer to clarify whether everything is being implemented according to their ideas. We also do intranet portraits and general projects for the BAUR Group, such as video shoots for the learning platform. A video shoot like this involves a lot of effort. You have to know your equipment, travel to other locations and create a concept for the job in advance.
Yes, for the most part we build the sets for the photo shoots ourselves. We have a huge warehouse with a large selection of furniture, decorative items, floors, walls, windows - basically everything you need. It depends on the client how much leeway we have for the design of the rooms. In the photo studio, you walk through the warehouse with a stylist and a craftsman and see what suits the product best. As a team, you then sit down together and determine the style of the photo shoot, provided the customer does not give any specifications, and consult with them.
The vocational school is very focused on photography. We still have standard subjects such as German, social studies and English, but the vast majority are photography-related. There are mainly practical tasks on the schedule. What's particularly interesting for the apprenticeship is that the vocational school allows us to photograph topics that we wouldn't do in the training company. At BAUR Studios, we mainly photograph products and the vocational school also gives me an insight into things like portraits, architecture, landscape and science photography. It's not only varied for us as "product people", but also for fellow students who are completing their training in the portrait studio. Analog photography is also currently making a comeback and is trendy. For example, we learn about the Polaroid process and how it works chemically. We also go through the structure and functions of the latest to the original cameras.
Firstly, that it was exactly the right path for me. The work in the photo studio is very varied and I still really enjoy it. Secondly, you realize which type of photography or videography suits you best. For me, it's event and sports photography.
