"Something creative" - Is that your answer to the question of what you want to do after school? Then you should pay attention now! Julia felt very similar when choosing an apprenticeship. Today she is training to become a media designer and in this interview she talks about her tasks, the application process and what makes training at the BAUR Group so special.
I would love to :). I am Julia Stricker, 21 years old and I live in Coburg. When I was 16, I moved from my home town of Schwandorf to Coburg to train as a technical product designer. But after 3 years of training, I realized that it wasn't the right thing for me. That's why I decided to do another apprenticeship as a media designer here at the BAUR Group. I am now in my 3rd year of training and have no regrets.
It sounds really cliché, but I've always loved drawing and that's why I wanted to do something creative in my work. And during my training as a product designer, I simply missed this aspect. I wasn't able to express myself as creatively as I would have liked. So I did some research into creative professions and stumbled across the profession of media designer. My brother is also a media designer, so he was able to show and tell me a bit about what he's done so far - I thought that was pretty cool.
The BAUR Group simply impressed me. The benefits, the appearance on the website and social media channels, the good reviews on Kununu, .... This first good impression of the BAUR Group got better and better the more I saw of the company and got to know the employees. In addition, my mother used to love ordering clothes from the BAUR catalog and how cool is it to be able to say now: "Mom, you know that BAUR catalog you used to order things from? Yep, that's where I'm doing my apprenticeship now." 😀
I work on my exercises or design graphics for our Instagram page. I also design flyers, banners, posters and newsletters for the B.Our store. In addition, there are always meetings in between - be it the daily meeting with the trainers and the other media designer trainees, the department meeting or the Insta crew routine. So there is always something to do and the tasks are so varied and interesting that it never gets boring.
I have block weeks at vocational school II in Bamberg. A bit monotonous but... must be... 😀
The best moment ... Well, I actually have the best moments at the trainee meetings outside of work. We always try to meet up on the last Tuesday of the month and do something cool together. That's always a lot of fun. The best thing for me at work is that the work you do is really appreciated. You get open and honest feedback and you can rely on your colleagues. I find that particularly nice during the apprenticeship.
You should definitely be keen and motivated, have some drawing talent and be willing to learn new things. Getting to know the Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign programs can be a little difficult at first, but if you have the will and give it some time, you'll get there.
You apply with your CV, a cover letter and samples of your work. But don't worry! This simply means drawings, photographs or similar that show that you are creative.
If your application documents are convincing, you will first be invited to an assessment center. There you will take a drawing test, briefly introduce yourself and get to know the trainers in a short speed dating session. Just stay relaxed, honest and completely yourself - that always goes down best.
The assessment center is followed by an interview with our trainers and the training officers. And believe me when I say: they are all super cool and relaxed, so you really don't need to be afraid of them. Just stay relaxed and have a chat with them. That's pretty much it 😀
Training as a media designer is a lot of fun and the BAUR Group offers all its trainees so many benefits (home office, seminars, staff store, Christmas and vacation bonuses, a great atmosphere, competent trainers and much more!) I can really recommend training as a media designer at the BAUR Group.
